Raphael Tuju’s new powerful position after latest appointment by Uhuru's party

The new appointment means Tuju is one of the most powerful people in the Jubilee Party outside of the Party Leader President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy Party Leader William Ruto.

New Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju.

Tuju who has been the head of the Jubilee Secretariat since late last year has now been appointed as the Secretary General of the Jubilee Party.

He now replaces Veronica Maina as Jubilee Party Secretary General.

The party has failed to name national party officials since late last year as in-house power struggles have threatened to split the party with various individuals jostling for the few powerful positions at the top hierarchy.

When the Jubilee Party officially launched at the Bomas of Kenya, Deputy President William Ruto said the officials would be elected in due time.

Jubilee interim team

In November, President Kenyatta and Deputy President Ruto named a sixteen member Jubilee interim team that was picked from a larger team named by the National Governing Council at Bomas.

The interim officials were  MP's Katoo Ole Metito (Kajiado South), Maina Kamanda (Starehe), Gideon Mung'aro (Kilifi North), Mohamed Mahmoud (Mandera West), Joyce Laboso (Sotik), Rachel Nyamai (Kitui South), Senators John Munyes (Turkana), Beatrice Elachi (nominated), Kiraitu Murungi (Meru), former CIC chair Charles Nyachae, Murang'a women rep Sabina Chege and governors Simon Kachapin (West Pokot) and Kenneth Lusaka (Bungoma).

The party later said it will hold hold elections for its officials 90 days after the general elections.

The move was seen as a strategy to forestall jostling for positions by top leaders of parties that dissolved to merge with the newly-formed outfit.
