Panic and fear has engulfed residents of Kajiado County after messages were circulated telling non-maasai locals to leave the region before the August 8 elections.
This is after ODM leader Raila Odinga during his tour in the area, made remarks regarding land that have been interpreted to as inflammatory.
The leaflets which were circulated on Sunday, warned four tribes to leave the area or face consequences after the Opposition leaders announcement.
“Onyo!!! Onyo!!! Onyo!!! ….. wote mwatakiwa kuhama Kajiado County kuamkia usiku wa 7/8/2017 vile halivyoamrisha Rais mtarajiwa Raila Amolo Odinga kwenye kikao na viongozi wa kimaasai kajiado tarehe 14/6/2017. Puuza ilani hii na utajuta cha mtema kuni
Loosely translated, Warning!! Warning!!...all are required to leave Kajiado County on the eve of 7/8/2017 just like incoming President Raila Amolo Odinga said in a meeting Maasai leaders in Kajiado on 14/6/2017. Ignore this warning and you will face consequences," Part of the leaflets read.
However, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has assured residents from Kajiado that they will be provided with security. Nkaissery also announced that Raila is being probed over the alleged remarks.
“Utterances by somebody who is seeking to be the president of this country are unfortunate and amount to incitement," Mr Nkaissery said.
Meanwhile, Kajiado County Commissioner Harsama Kello has stated that non-locals will not be ejected after the message and urged non-locals to remain calm.
