The government has shut down 811 private clinics and dispensaries around the country over what was termed as failure to meet minimum requirements for licensing.

The Ministry of Health outlined that the inspection was based on services offered, health infrastructure and the minimum standards for health personnel.

Out of the 811 facilities, 108 were found to be in Nairobi County.

In Elgeyo Marakwet County, the ministry shut down 33 facilities as confirmed by county Health CEC Kiprono Chepkok.

"We received a letter from the Ministry through the Council of Governors that ordered 33 facilities in our county to be closed. No reasons were stipulated in the letter, however, it states that inspections were carried out two months ago.

"Indeed health inspectors visited the county at the said time but we did not receive a report on their findings. But we agree that some facilities have not met the standards and this is because some facilities are opened to help the residents in marginalized areas to receive much needed health services. They'd have gone through proper channels to help address the issues ," the minister reported.
