Government Spokesman Col. (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna on Thursday announced that the first 228 homes in President Uhuru Kenyatta's affordable housing initiative will be ready by September 2019.

The houses will be part of Phase One of the project that is currently under construction at Park Road, Nairobi. The site will have 1,370 houses in total.

Spokesman Oguna also introduced a new structure that will be used to calculate the levy that individuals will be required to pay according to their income.

"The affordable housing programme will target people in the income brackets classified as social housing (below Sh20,000), low cost (between Sh20,000 to Sh50,000), mortgage gap (between Sh50,000 to Sh150,000) and middle to high income (Sh150,000 and above)," he stated.

The statement outlined that the government will complete the targeted housing units through partnerships.

"A number of partners have also come on board to ensure the success of the affordable housing programme, with 25 counties so far signing an MoU with the Government for its implementation.

"The National Housing Corporation (NHC) will put up 3,000 units in the 25 counties, while the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) will partner with the State Department of Housing to construct 100,000 affordable units across the country; all in efforts to actualize the affordable housing programme," he explained.
