Saumu revealed that her relationship with Gatu had been a mistake made out of youthful ignorance, saying she was beaten up on several occasions.
“I was young and naïve and I rushed to marriage life. I was 21 and it was one of those rebellious things people do in their youth despite advise from parents and friends.
“I would advise young girls to stay away from violent relationships. It begins with a slap and next he puts a knife against you. The violence was there and I shared with my friend until it got so bad until I told my father,” Saumu narrated during an interview with a local radio station.
She added that despite her father’s confrontational approach in politics, he reacted by counselling her and offering fatherly guidance.
“Despite him being a politician and a leader, he reacted as a father. He called me aside and asked me to take shape of my life as I had become my father. There was no drama of attacking Ben or anything, we just went our separate ways,” she added.
Saumu urged single mothers to ensure their children have a father figure in their life - saying her current boyfriend, Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip, was playing the same role in her child's life.
