He was crying a lot – Mike Rua on John De Mathew’s last moments before fatal accident

Popular Kikuyu musician Mike Rua has shared the last moments he had with his friend and colleague John DeMathew who died in a road accident on Sunday night.

Rua said he had spent the whole of Sunday with DeMathew as they were both attending a fundraiser in Gatanga organized in support of fellow musician Peter Kigia’s ailing child.

The Mugithi superstar added that DeMathew was emotional and he had cried a lot before leaving Gatanga for his Nairobi home.

We spent the whole of yesterday with him and we talked a lot, about music, about rights for musicians as he was the Chairman of Tamco (Talented Musicians Cooperative),” he narrated.

Rua was overcome by emotion while he was sharing the last moments with DeMathew, and requested to cut short the live interview.

The last moments, he was crying and crying I don’t know what was the problem because we talked about some issues we had some controversies here and there (pauses and sighs). I don’t think it is the right time to talk about this thing, kindly call me sometime later,” he said.

DeMathew died about twenty minutes after leaving Kigia’s Gatanga home after his car rammed into a stationary lorry along Thika Road, near the Blue Post Hotel.

The musician was rushed to a hospital in Thika where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
