Mr Githii had been serving as the Commissioner for Intelligence and Strategic Communication at the tax authority until his appointment.
"In exercise of the of powers conferred by Section 11 (1) of the KRA Act, the CS of National Treasury and Planning appoints James Githii Mburu to be the Commissioner General of KRA for a period of three years, with effect from 1st July 2019," a Gazette Notice from the CS reads in part.
Githii replaces John Njiraini whose term was extended last year for one more year.
Njiriani took over from Michael Waweru in 2012. Unlike his predecessor who always surpassed revenue targets set for him during the Kibaki era, Njiraini's legacy entails a poor record of never having met a single revenue target.
CBK Governor handed fresh 4-year term
In a separate Gazette Notice issued on the same day by President Uhuru Kenyatta, CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge was handed a renewed term in office.
Dr Njoroge is overseeing the transition of Kenyan currency according to the provisions of the 2010 Constitution.
Recently, the governor presented the new currency notes to President Kenyatta adding that the old Sh1,000 note will be demonetized on October 1, 2019.
