KDF Soldier & 3 DCI Officers Arrested Ferrying Drugs

A Kenya Defense Forces soldier was among a group of five people arrested transporting drugs on Wednesday.

Three officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations were also arrested in the morning operation where police recovered 68 bales of bhang.

In a statement, the DCI said that the suspects were arrested during an operation near Kanyonyoo Market along Garissa- Thika Highway.

"68 BALES (245 KGS) of bhang and Kshs239,500 Cash was today morning Seized and three police officers Arrested," the statement read in part.

"Suspects are PC Japhet Fondo, PC Bob Otieno and APC Michael Mwangi placed in custody," it continued.

Contraband

According to the DCI, the suspects were in a government vehicle which had bags of rice labelled GoK, beans, sugar and contraband milk powder.

The statement added: "Also Impounded while being ferried using the Govt M/Vehicle (Toyota Landcruiser) are; 6 Bags of Rice labelled GoK, 2 Bags of Beans, 6 Bags of Sugar and contraband Milk Powder among other Foodstuffs & Laundry assortments."

Cases of Kenya Defence Forces soldiers and other members of the disciplined forces being involved in crimes including robbery, murder, drug trafficking, trade in ivory and hiring out guns to criminals have been reported.

The trend has prompted the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to initiate a process that is looking into the involvement of police in crime as a topical issue.
