Pay cut

The group now wants the current crop of political leader to take a huge pay cut and that each MP should earn not more than Sh200,000 and that the 10 governors should get at most Sh300,000 each.

"We are utterly disturbed by the huge wage bill and continued extravagance of politicians in the country. Over Sh35 million is spent on MPs' meals and accommodation, over Sh12 million on flights and more than Sh20 million on allowances,” said Haki Kenya Executive Director Mr Hussein Khalid.

The lobby group, on the other hand, has demanded an increase in the number of special interest MPs to a tune of 30, in addition to the 120, to technically make it 150.

Currently, every MP earns a basic salary of about Sh740,000 but with allowances, the amount goes to more than Sh1 million per month. Governors earn a monthly basic pay of Sh1.11 million.

"If you add the costs of fuel, bodyguards, chauffeurs and other aides who were also around, [you will find that] Kenyans paid more than Sh100 million,” the Dircetor said.
