Homa Bay County assembly speaker Elizabeth Ayoo on Tuesday reported back to a completely empty office following a prolonged battle with Members of County Assembly (MCAs).

Accompanied by majority Chief Whip, Richard Ogindo, the speaker bought three plastic chairs and a table and begun executing her duties as usual.

Her previous attempts to access teh office have been met by strong opposition and fistfights among factions of the MCAs who support her and those against her.

Rachel Ruto is no stranger to making bold yet elegant fashion statements, but during the state visit of the Dutch royals on March 18, 2025, it wasn’t just her outfit that stood out—it was her shoes. The Kenyan First Lady stepped out in a pair of brown suede block heels adorned with a gold emblem.

She later addressed the press calling for dialogue with the MCAs who ousted her. At the time, she was accompanied by 13 members of the House who seemed to be on her side.

MCAs Arrested

The wrangles in Homa Bay county have seen two ward representatives arrested on assault charges after Ayoo filed a suit in court and recorded a statement with the police.

The two, Majority Leader Walter Muok and Central Karachuonyo MCA Julius Gaya, allegedly attacked the speaker with blows and kicks during an October sitting as they accused her of being biased.

The speaker, at the time, was reading a report before the House concerning ODM leaders within the assembly.

Violence erupted within the assembly chambers and the ceremonial mace also disappeared.

Seven other MCAs were summoned to Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices for questioning.

Speaker Ayoo is yet to withdraw her petition before the Employment and Labour Relations court which allowed her to return to the assembly despite her impeachment.
