Man who assaulted wife in Makueni finally arrested

David Nzomo was apprehended on Thursday morning in Nguu Masumbu Kibwezi West constituency. Angry locals camped outside Nguu AP camp baying for Nzomo's blood.

"We can confirm that Nzomo was arrested earlier in the day at Nguu kalamba area of Nzaui sub-county near Emali. Say no to ," National Police Service said.

Mr Nzomo’s arrest comes two days after Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji came across the video and ordered his immediate detention.

"The DPP’s attention has been drawn to a viral video clip of a man assaulting a woman in Makueni. Consequently, the DPP has directed the  to immediately have the suspect arrested & arraigned before court  @CREAWKenya," read a tweet from the DPP’s office.

In the video, Nzomo was caught brutally kicking and slapping his helpless wife identified as Winifred Mwende.

Luckily, Mwende was rescued by her in-laws who rushed her to Makueni Level Four Referral Hospital, where she is recuperating.

It is said that the beating started after Nzomo received a phone call implicating Mwende of being unfaithful to him.

The 35-year-old woman has since received aid from Gender Affairs Cabinet Secretary Margaret Kobia, who promised that she will be enrolled in a government financial programme.

“We will link the survivor with the socio-economic empowerment programme in my ministry will ensure that she is economically empowered,” said Prof Kobia.
