Why Human Rights activist Maina Kiai was detained at JKIA

Here is why the Human Rights Activist was detained

Its reported that Miana was detained, simply because the immigration office was demanding to see his clearance before he leaves the country.

Maina who was supposed to catch a flight at 7:50am found himself in a standoff when immigration people refused to stamp his passport.

Maina Kiai is a Kenyan lawyer and human rights activist who formerly served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association. He is also a member of the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC).

The immigration supervisor at the airport Nancy Nganga didn't say why Kiai needs clearance yet he isn't a government official.

Recently KHRC has been in trouble with the government after their ordered their accounts to be frozen.

They obtained orders from a court stopping NGO coordination board boss Fazul Mahamed from executing the freeze order.

Later, immigration allowed him to leave.
