Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has been arrested by police officers at Nyali bridge.

Joho was arrested alongside Kisauni Member of Parliament(MP) Rashid Bedzimba while riding on motorbikes to avoid traffic.

Reports indicate that Joho was nabbed by Flying squad and GSU officers to prevent him from attending President Uhuru Kenyatta's launch of Mtongwe Ferry services.

The Governor has been released and escorted to his offices where he said that he opted to use a motorbike after his vehicle was blocked by police officers.

"We had already decided that we would attend the function. That is why I opted to take a boda boda after my vehicles were blocked," the governor stated.

Tononoka rally

The Governor’s arrest comes barely hours after President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto held a major rally at Tononoka grounds in Mombasa County.

During Kenyatta’s visit to the Coast region, a number of leaders from the opposition defected to Jubilee.

Among them included women representative Joyce Lay, Governor Hussein Dado and Taita Taveta Senator Dan Mwazo.

The Head of State and his deputy have been making numerous trips to the coast region in a bid to lure the electorate to vote for jubilee during the upcoming polls.

On Sunday, Joho was forced to cancel a planned rally in Mombasa after police officers declined to provide security.
