Why NASA could be de-registered

Pressure is already mounting on the Office of the Registrar of Political parties.

A petition seeking to deregister all political parties under the umbrella of the defunct Nasa coalition by the Registrar of political parties received a major boost after the Council of Professionals of Kenya threw its weight behind it.

In a petition, the Lucy Ndung’u led Registrar claimed that the newly formed National Resistance Movement does not respect the law on formation of political parties (Article 91(1)) and that it doesn’t heed the rule of law.

"We, by this petition, humbly beseech yourself to invoke your powers and commence investigations and disciplinary proceedings that may lead to the process of deregistering the NASA coalition, its militia group NRM and affiliate political parties," the Council of Professionals of Kenya chaired by former Budalangi MP Ababu Namwamba said in a letter to Mrs Ndung’u.

In a riveting accusation laid against the Mr Odinga led group, the former lawmaker who recently joined Jubilee, argued that the purported Resistance Movement prevented people from exercising their democratic right in the October 26 repeat polls, after the team allegedly intimidated IEBC officials.

In the recent past, Nasa presidential candidate Raila Odinga morphed the National Super Alliance to the National Resistance Movement, a move that has created a disquiet in the Jubilee camp.

Last week, speaking to the CNN and Al Jazeera, Deputy President William Ruto accused Mr Odinga of planting militia in the four counties – Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay and Migori – to block people from taking part in the repeat polls, which he jerked out.

Nasa Principals Raila Odinga, Musalia Mudavadi, Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula formed the National Super Alliance to counter Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee ahead of the August 8 polls.

The Coalition, comprising of four political parties – ODM, Wiper Ford Kenya and ANC – would later be transformed to a Resistance Movement a day to the repeat polls on October 26.to block people from taking part in the repeat polls, which he jerked out.
