Just three days before she officially assumes office as the British High Commissioner to Kenya, Jane Marriott has revealed a trait she admires about the country.
1 thing new UK envoy admires most about Kenyans
In an interview with a British publication, Marriot said that she admired the spirit of Kenyans to want to better their lives.
Marriott said: "...there's a real entrepreneurial zeal. It's about the partnership and making things happen, standing on your own two feet and getting stuff done."
She continued: "As a Yorkshire girl, I very much appreciate that approach to life."
Top on her tray
The new high commissioner said that top on her agenda will be the need to secure a free trade deal with Kenya as the UK looks into exiting the EU.
"The second thing will be around security, making sure UK interests are protected and that we're working with the Kenyan forces to help them protect their interests, which obviously then benefits us," she said.
In June Britain appointed Ms Marriott as its first woman High Commissioner to Kenya.
First woman envoy
“Ms Marriott is the first woman to be appointed to the role. She brings a wealth of experience to the position,” read a statement sent to newsrooms.
She previously served as Her Majesty’s ambassador to Yemen, and British deputy ambassador to Iran, and has also undertaken postings in the US, Iraq and Afghanistan.
The High Commissioner is the UK government’s representative in a Commonwealth nation and they are responsible for the direction and work of the High Commission.
