Police surround Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei's house following summons by DCI

Police on Tuesday morning surrounded Senator Samson Cherargei's house in Nandi County following a summons issued by the DCI on Monday.

The officers are reported to have taken the drastic stance after attempts to reach the Nandi Senator on phone were futile.

At some minutes to 10 o'clock, the Senator emerged from his house and climbed onto the police land rover that had been parked in front of his gate for most of the morning.

It remains unclear why police opted to arrest the Senator given that the summons had required him to report to DCI offices in Nandi East on Wednesday August 21, 2019.

Cherargei accused of hate speech

The DCI asked Senator Cherargei to record a statement on remarks he made during a funeral in his county over the weekend.

The Nandi Senator's remarks were captured in a short clip that was circulated widely on social media.

In the video clip Cherargei sent out a warning to those who are anti-DP William Ruto cautioning them that they will regret opposing the DP 2022 presidential bid.
