The handling of the case stands out in the expedited manner in which the suspects were rushed to court and even remanded for nearly a week.
It is a case that brings to question the President’s commitment to the fight graft and his response when his close friends and family members are accused of corruption.
Pulselive.co.ke compiled a list of eight close friends of President Kenyatta who have been accused of corruption and how the Jubilee Leader has reacted.
1. Bruce Odhiambo
In 2014, President Kenyatta appointed his childhood friend Bruce Odhiambo to chair the Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YDF).
Two years later, Odhiambo was accused of conspiring to steal Sh180 million from the YDF.
Odhiambo has also been taken to court on corruption-related charge although at the time of publishing this story, the case has not been concluded.
2. Anne Waiguru
In 2015, the ex-Devolution CS came under fire over suspicious transactions involving Sh826 million at the National Youth Service (NYS) which was under her ministry.
In reaction to the scandal, President Kenyatta defended Waiguru, terming her as a whistle blower who was being pursued “to meet political ends”.
At the time of publishing, most of the cases in NYS 1 have collapsed on a technicality surrounding the composition of the EACC.
3. Sicily Kariuki
The current Health CS has recently been on the spotlight over the second Sh9 billion scandal that has seen her PS Lillian Omollo remanded at the Lang’ata Women’s Prison.
Kariuki, who has previously served on the board of the Kenyatta family-owned Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA) has been spared blame and has continued with her normal duties in her new docket at the Ministry of Health.
4. Kathleen Kihanya & Nyokabi Kenyatta
Sundale International Limited, where both Nyokabi and Kihanya were listed directors, was reported to have been paid Sh41 million in a controversial tender where they were placed in the category of the “marginalised”.
The EACC had promised to grill suppliers linked to the scandal but it is not known if the two were among those investigated as the matter went away shortly after.
6. Bill Arocho
7. William Ruto
The Deputy President has been accused of involvement in various corruption cases including one where he was charged for fraud over the alleged sale of a piece of in Ngong forest to Company Ltd.
He has also been accused of grabbing land from the Kenya Civil Authority, and using it to build the Weston Hotel.
Weston Hotel has also been accused of attempted land-grab on Lang’ata Primary School.
President Kenyatta has maintained consistent silence over all the cases linking his deputy to corrupt deals
8. Justin Muturi
Another of Kenyatta’s close allies, Muturi’s career in the Judiciary ended in 1997 when he was accused of soliciting a Sh1 million bribe to influence a case where he was presiding as a magistrate.
He was, however, acquitted although he left the Judiciary for business and later joined politics where he has been a close companion in President Kenyatta’s journey from a nominated MP to the Head of State.
