Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has been praised by Auditor General Edward Ouko for upholding international standards in his county.

Mr Ouko was impressed by how the Mombasa administration handled county funds in the year 2016/2017.

According to the auditor-general, he did not have any queries with the Mombasa books.

Ouko noted that the statements collected form the executives were fair, in addition to meeting international standards.

"I confirm that nothing has come to my attention to cause me to believe that public money has not been applied lawfully and in an effective way," Ouko stated.

Finance chief officer Asha Abdi conveyed the county government's joy at the auditor's report.

Joho's government has been facing fierce criticism from residents and politicians alike.

In 2017 residents raised concerns over failed garbage collection in the county that had led to filth around the coastal town.

For a period of time the governor remained quiet and away from the public and later closed down the Kibarani dumpsite to turn it into a recreational park.
