Motion to impeach Speaker launched

The members of the assembly have blamed the Speaker for abuse of office.

Several members of Nairobi County Assembly have launched a petition seeking the removal of Beatrice Elachi as the County speaker.

The new move comes barely a week after Ms Elachi rejected the name of Miguna Miguna as the nominee by Governor Mike Sonko as the Deputy Governor on nationality technicality.

The MCAs have cited abuse of office by the Speaker, in what seems a renewed revolt between the County’s executive and the legislature, given she turned down the Governor’s nominee.

Last week on Tuesday, Governor Sonko was thrown in a limbo after Speaker Elachi rejected in totality, the name of Miguna Miguna to the Deputy Governor's job.

Dr Miguna had been picked early May by the governor to deputise him, after the resignation of Polycarp Igathe in January.

But Ms Elachi threw out the name nearly a month after his [Miguna's] name was forwarded to the office of the Speaker.

“Pursuant to Standing Order number one of the Assembly, the name of the nominee be referred back to the appointing authority for further validation,” said Ms Elachi.

In her notice, Elachi cited Article 78 of Constitution on dual citizenship, which put Miguna on the firing line. Miguna has dual citizenship of Kenya and Canada.
