Eliud Kipchoge's Name Missing From Jamhuri Day's Honoree List

Olympian Eliud Kipchoge will not be recognised during Jamhuri Day Celebrations despite his achievements for Kenya

The 34-year-old Kenyan won the London Marathon and five months later, he won the Berlin Marathon in 2:01:39 to smash the world record.

Despite this great achievement, Kipchoge's name was not among the recipients of presidential awards and honours as the country marked the 55th independence day.

Ten governors, DPP Noordin Haji and DCI George Kinoti were among hundreds of recipients of presidential awards and honours.

Also in the list is ODM party chairman John Mbadi who was among those conferred with Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH) Second Class.

Governors

The governors who have been honoured with EGH second class are Ali Joho (Mombasa), Martin Wambora (Embu), Samuel Tunai (Narok) and Cornel Rasanga (Siaya).

Turkana's Josphat Nanok, Alex Tolgos (Elgeyo Marakwet), Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu), Dr Alfred Mutua (Machakos),  Dr Joyce Laboso (Bomet) and Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga) also made it in the list.

A notice in the Kenya Gazette said the individuals will be recognized because of their distinguished and outstanding services to the nation.

Other Kenyans

Other notable personalities who will receive a presidential award (Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear CBS) on Jamhuri Day are: Nyokabi Kenyatta, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja, ODM Nominated Senator Agnes Zani, Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa and Amb. Macharia Kamau.

Various statesmen including academicians, technocrats, politicians, journalists, athletes, clergymen among others have received the coveted awards which are only conferred by a sitting Head of State in recognition to their contribution to Kenya.

These commendations are given to recipients on the advice of the National Honours and Awards Committee in the Office of the President.

According to the National Honours Act, those who merit the decoration include; a person who exhibits exemplary qualities, or achievements of heroism, patriotism or leadership, one who has made an exemplary contribution to the country in the economic, scientific, academic, sports, journalism, business, security or other fields.
