Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero arrested over Sh68 million corruption

Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero was arrested on Friday morning and held by EACC officials over corruption charges.

According to a statement from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Dr Kidero and 16 others were involved in an elaborate scheme that saw them fraudulently pay Sh68 million to a law firm Mwangi and Company Advocates.

The statement further explained that the EACC had conducted extensive investigations between the months of December and April and developed a strong case against the 17 accused parties.

"The DPP has directed that the suspects should be arraigned in court and prosecuted for; conspiracy to commit and offence of corruption, abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property, dealing with suspect property and money laundering," the statement read in part.

Former Embakasi Central MP arrested

Among those arrested with Dr Kidero are former Mayor of Nairobi and former Embakasi Central MP John Ndirangu and former Councilor Paul Mutunga Mutungi.

Two former county officials - George Wainaina Njogu and Aduma Joshua Owuor - were also arrested .

Nine current employees of the Nairobi County government in the Finance department were also listed as suspects by the ODPP.

These were listed as acting Deputy Director of Internal Audit Manaseh Karanja Kepha, Principal Accountant Philomena Kavinya Nzuki, accountants Ng'ang'a Mungai, Charity Muringo, Peterson Njiru, Ekaya Alumasi, James Mimi, Elizabeth Wanjiru and Alice Mundia.
