The director-general explained that there was a shortage of raw materials that caused a backlog in the clearance of vehicles from the Container Freight Station (CFS).

Mejja explained that the new number plates would be issued over the next five days.

"We would like to assure Kenyans that the challenge faced in production of new Car Number Plates due to a shortage of raw material, has since been resolved.

"Production has resumed and we expect the back log to be addressed over the next 5 days, hence return to normalcy," Mejja's statement read in part.

The NTSA brief further explained that the authority had taken action to ensure cars are cleared on time.

"In the interim NTSA had already taken measures to ensure that there was no delay in the issuance of licenses and release of cars from the port," the statement outlined.

The hitch had caused various concerned online as reports indicated that thousands of vehicles were being held at various depots in Mombasa.
