Daring conman who forged papers to get a Sh1 million per month gov’t job

Only in Kenya!

Peter Jabone Mbugua Njenga rose to the top echelons of managing a government parastatals by forging his educational papers.

As the General Manager of Operations and Maintenance, Njenga was managing nearly 600 engineers and for 18 months – was overseeing a portfolio of nearly Sh10 billion.

It is not clear why the board did not ask for his clearance certificates from KRA, EACC, and the DCI as is routine for such high-level job applications.

The board of KPC was impressed by Njenga’s fake credentials that it overlooked all other 24 applicants who applied alongside him.

Apart from having a master’s degree in engineering from the University of Houston, he listed Transport PS Andrew Kamau as a referee.

It later emerged that his first degree, from Prairie View A & M was non-existent and was not recognised by the Commission for University Education.

A local daily reported that fearing the incident would cause embarrassment, KPC quietly let off Njenga and paid him three months advance salary.
