Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi has announced that all public universities will be closed by August 4th.
Speaking to a local daily, vice chancellors from different institutions of higher learning disclosed that the decision was made to allow for staff to participate in Elections as well as students.University of Nairobi VC, Professor Peter Mbithi, confirmed that the institution would be closed on the said date.
"This is to inform all staff that the University of Nairobi will close with effect from August 4, 2017 up to August 18, 2017 during the electioneering period," Prof Mbithi was quoted by the standard.Other VC's divulged that other universities were making similar arrangements to close the institutions by the issued date. Prior to the announcement, Matiang'i had stated that all schools would be closed for two weeks to allow the General Election to proceed smoothly.This would enable the government to protect property in school that would be used in the upcoming polls.
