3 conditions for Teacher Tabichi to access the Sh 100M prize money

Kenyan teacher Peter Tabichi, who won Sh100 million (USD 1 million after bagging the Varkey Foundation 2019 Global Teacher Prize has to follow a set of rules made by the foundation in order to access the money.

 Tabichi must continue teaching or providing educational support for the next five years, to students aged between 5 and 18 years in a school set up.

Varkey Foundation, also requires the teacher to attend financial counselling sessions provided by the organisation in a bid to help him handle the vast sum of money.

The sessions granted by VF which is a family organisation, are free charge.

The teacher from Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Nakuru would be obligatory to serve as the Global Ambassador for the foundation for the next five years.

“Serving as Global Ambassador for VF shall include but not be limited to attending events, speaking to the media, undertaking training and other commitments outside of working hours, on weekends and/or on holidays.

“VF will pay for and arrange all travel and accommodation,” stated the family organisation.

According to the international group, the prize money will be paid out over a 10 year period in a Sh10 million installments ($100,000).

Tabichi's work earns him the Varkey Foundation 2019 Global Teacher Prize

The jubilant Tabichi who is a scientist teacher, was awarded the trophy in a colorful ceremony held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Sunday.

The prize is a yearly award granted by VF to a teacher who made an outstanding contribution to the profession.

Judges who determine the result, had stated that Tabichi’s work at the school had dramatically improved his pupils achievements.
