Kenya and Ethiopia have high stakes in Jubaland because they both have troops in the United Nations backed African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom).

Jubaland has been at the centre of a growing power struggle in East Africa with Kenya and Ethipia playing silent crucuial roles in the past election held in August 2019.

Kenya government is said to have supported President Ahmed Islam Mohammed Madobe, who has ruled the region over the last eight years.

On the other hand, the Somalia government with the support of Ethiopia and Eritrea, wanted a central government, a position that created animosity between Mogadishu and Nairobi.
