Delivering judgment, Justice Abubakar Sadiq, said that since the defendant had pleaded guilty to the charge, the court had no option than to sentence him accordingly.

Sadiq warned the convict to desist from committing crimes after serving his prison term.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Idris, who resides around Shagari Mosque, Area 1, Abuja, was sentenced on one-count charge of theft.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Mrs Florence Auhioboh, had informed the court that on May 24, one James Sam of Total filling station Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, reported the matter at Utako Police Station.

Auhioboh told the court that the convict committed the offence on May 23 at 11.00 p.m. at the filling station.

She said that Sam reported the incident for proper investigation, which led to the arrest of the convict.

Auhioboh said the convict intentionally entered Total filling station at Wuse and stole a customer’s cell phone from his car.

The prosecutor said during police investigation and interrogation, the stolen phone was recovered from the convict.

According to Auhioboh, the offence contravenes the provisions of Section 287 of the Penal Code

Following the plea of the convict, the prosecutor prayed the court to try Idris summarily under Section 347 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.
