Why Sportpesa could terminate all sponsorship deals in Kenya

Kenya Premier League Sponsors SportPesa have threatened to terminate all the sponsorships deals if the proposed 50% betting control bill is passed to law.

SportPesa who have been fighting for the proposed heavy tax to be reduced will see many clubs orphaned due to lack of Sponsors. Early on SportPesa had filed a case  appealing for the proposed tax to be reduced.

Currently SportPesa are sponsoring a number of Kenyan Clubs among them; AFC Leopards, Gor Mahia, Kenya Rugby team “Shujaa” and also a number of teams in Tanzania.

According to Bamba Sports, SportPesa are set to terminate all its sponsorship” SportPesa to terminate all sponsorships if betting control bill is passed to law” twitted Bamba sport.

Just last week, the gambling site launched its operations in neighboring Tanzania whereas it also signed a deal with Spanish League La Liga in April.

This is coming days after the betting SportPesa enter into partnership with English Premier League side Everton.

The deal that was signed between Sportpesa and Everton will take effect from June 1, and will see the SportPesa brand feature on the Club’s shirts for the 2017/18 season.

Speaking during the launch of the deal at the club’s headquarters in Liverpool, Everton CEO, Robert Elstone, hailed the historic agreement.

“We welcome SportPesa to the Everton family and look forward to working closely with a rapidly growing, global company. Over the coming months and years, we will work together to realize our ambitions. We look forward to an exciting partnership together.” Said Mr. Elstone

If this move will manifest, many clubs will be left in financial struggles as SportPesa has been helping them a lot.
