About Mike Mbuvi Kioko Sonko
Mike Mbuvi Kioko Mbuvi Sonko, fondly Sonko (Sheng' word for rich) was born in Mombasa on February 27, 1975. He is the immediate former MP for Makadara Constituency of Nairobi County after winning a by-election.
In 2013, he became the first senator of Nairobi County with 808,705 votes. He has been known for his generosity in the city. He has been behind the Sonko Rescue Team, a social aid group operating in Nairobi providing emergency services and cleaning services, offering jobs to hundreds of Nairobians.
Mr. Sonko’s wealth is traced back to Mombasa where he was born and raised up by his father. His father was a dealer in real estate agency – Pelly Properties – which he co-owned by yet another wealthy businessman in Mombasa.
His popularity is pegged on how he dresses. In 2013, he was denied access to parliament as the parliament security personnel ordered him to get the right dress for the event. The youth identify with him as he has been attending musical concerts with them in the city.
After the Westgate shopping mall attack in September 2013, Sonko claimed that he had warned the security services of a possible attack three months previously.
His relationship with the incumbent governor Dr Evans Kidero has been a ruby one owing to the earlier claims that the incumbent could not account for hundreds of cash which is said to have been misappropriated ion the award of tenders for key services in the county government.
He once bitterly exchanged with the governor Evans Kidero before the house committee on investment over claims that the incumbent governor had misappropriated huge volumes of cash, a disbursement from the national government.
Sonko’s wealth
At some point, his father spilt in the business he earlier held with yet another businessman in Mombasa – Pelly Properties. His father then started Gidson Properties where Sonko was the sales and marketing manager.
e relocated to Nairobi in 1994 and bought eight matatus. He had them ply route 42: Dandora and Umoja. This was his business until 1997, alongside buying and selling plots.
He changed the matatusand bought a minibus, for Buru Buru route (Ruffcuts) and other travel and tour vehicles.
Sonko has been on the limelight in Makadara for starting small groups, alias Sonko Saccos that have been instrumental in financing and helping the youth create employment opportunities alongside getting loans for business.

The team is his initiative designed to enhance service delivery to the people of Nairobi County. According to his website, it is a way to show gratitude to the massive people living in Nairobi “who had faith and elected him into office in 2013,” he says.
