Content creator and comedian MC Exodus has captured the hearts of many Kenyans online through his relatable and humorous skits.

Known off-stage as Eric Obuya, MC Exodus has grown into a digital sensation, amassing over one million followers on TikTok and gaining tens of thousands more across other platforms.

However, behind the laughter and viral videos lies a story of ambition, resilience, and an unrelenting pursuit of a dream.

A passion sparked by love for radio

While many know him for his online comedy, MC Exodus initially had his sights set on a career in journalism, specifically in radio broadcasting.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he crossed paths with veteran radio personality Alex Mwakideu. This chance meeting would prove to be a pivotal moment.

“Wewe ndio uliniinspire the first person na ndio hii matunda sai, 2020 time ya Corona…nikakwambia mimi niko na kipaji ya utangazaji, ukaniexplainia lazima nikuwe na kitu naeza present huko mbele pia mimi nikutetee,” he recalled in a conversation with Mwakideu.

Rather than discouraging him, Mwakideu advised Exodus to first create content he could showcase. Taking that advice seriously, he began experimenting with skits and digital content, laying the foundation for the comedic brand he is now known for.

Turning a challenge into a career

Inspired by Mwakideu’s mentorship, MC Exodus started uploading content during the pandemic. His skits, which often touch on everyday Kenyan struggles with a humorous twist, quickly gained traction.

“I create content based on things we all go through, asking someone to repeat themselves, being misunderstood, things like that. People connect with it,” he said.

Interestingly, his childhood experience with hearing difficulties became a comedic strength. “Since I was young, I had hearing troubles. Sometimes when someone talks to me, I have to say ‘eh?’ So I used that as an advantage in my content,” he explained.

This unique angle, paired with a natural flair for comedy, helped MC Exodus stand out in a crowded content creation space.

Collaboration and community

As his star continued to rise, MC Exodus began working with other creators, including old household names like Mama Kayai and Mogaka.

These collaborations helped to elevate his brand further and connected him with a broader audience, including fans of classic Kenyan TV and film.

In addition to building his following on TikTok, which now stands at over one million, he has also grown his Instagram base to 64,000 followers, a testament to his consistent and engaging content.

A humble beginning in Nairobi

Long before the fame, Exodus arrived in Nairobi with modest hopes. He initially worked as a househelp, a job that came to an abrupt end. Left with limited options, he was forced to survive by any means possible.

His journey from that point has been nothing short of inspirational. With no formal training in broadcasting or media, he carved a path using his lived experiences, humour, and a smartphone.

MC Exodus made his first significant foray into entertainment back in 2016 when he appeared on the popular Churchill Comedy platform. Although he didn’t immediately take off, the experience gave him a glimpse of what was possible.

It wasn't until four years later, with the onset of the pandemic and a nudge from Mwakideu, that he returned to comedy with renewed determination.
