A few months ago, 1 FM suddenly and silently went off air. It was said that the company was undergoing a financial crisis that included unpaid bills and they couldn’t stay afloat anymore. The new kid on the block NRG radio took up 1 FM’s 97.1 frequency and dropped their 91.3 frequency back in April.

During an exchange with a fan on his page, Dng a former presenter at One FM confirmed what fans had feared all along, that we had seen the last of the station.
“What went wrong 1fm ikafungwa?” a fan identified as John Kimani asked and DNG responded with a vague comment that read “Hali ya biashara.”

A closely placed source at One FM has now intimated to Pulse Live that it is true that the station had shut down, but not because of a financial crisis but to explore other business ventures.
“The owner of the station decided to venture into other business opportunities,” the source revealed but wouldn’t dish out more information.
Kubamba and X FM shut down
One FM is not the only station that has shut down. In March 2019, Radio Africa shut down 10-year old Rock Station XFM for a less niche product, Smooth FM which appeals to Rhythm and Blues (RnB) lovers.

The Media group, however, denied claims that X FM had gone belly up and claimed that XFM has gone 100% digital and could be accessed on the Songa app.
“This is not goodbye. Rather, we’re loading out here. And loading in full blast... with real nonstop music on Songa. So, let's get real with XFM. Now online and on your mobile,” read a promo.
Urban Christian Radio Station Kubamba also closed down on grounds that they were suffering financially as they relied heavily on donors who pulled out making the business hard to run.
The station had initially taken to its social media pages informing its listeners that they were ‘transitioning’ but didn’t give details on the type of transition they are walking into.
“Today we say goodbye to 91.6FM, Comment below or call in LIVE on 0792-100010 and bid us KWAHERI as we transition” read a post on Instagram.
An update on their WhatsApp number revealed to fans why they were forced into transition.
“Kubamba, since its inception relied heavily on donors and when they pulled it became hard for the business to run,” read the update.
