As People reports, Wright was first diagnosed with leukemia in October 2017, when he was just 28. According to his GoFundMe , after completing treatment he had returned to work and was getting back to his normal life when he was re-diagnosed with a more severe case of leukemia in December 2018. Wright was married to another The Biggest Loser alum, Rebecca Meyer Wright. The two met during season eight, and she had been posting updates on Wright's condition during his illness.

Former Biggest Loser contestants have been posting their reactions to Wright's passing, with season eight winner Danny Cahill saying that "the world lost a bit of its light."

Courtney Crozier, who appeared on Biggest Loser season 11, wrote that Wright was "one of the kindest people I have ever met & is a true difference maker in this world," and that she was "honored to have known him."
