Wajir County director of Education Hussein Osman has confirmed the death of four children.

The children aged between 7 and 11 are said to have drowned while trying to swim in a swollen stream in Eldas Wajir.

This tragedy comes a day after a woman was swept away by flash floods in Turkana County on Tuesday night.

Turkana County Kenya Red Cross Coordinator Nick Thuo said the body of the 20-year-old woman was retrieved and taken to Lodwar County Referral Hospital mortuary.

Heavy rainfall to persist

Two schools, St Kevin Secondary School and Erait Academy, in Turkana, have already closed and learners sent home following the floods.

St Kevin Secondary School Principal Thomas Lokuruka said the students were affected after River Turkwel burst its banks flooding the institution.

The floods destroyed classrooms, food stores, laboratories, toilets, dormitories, staff rooms, offices and examination materials.

An American scientific agency has said that the heavy rain will continue in the East African region for the next few weeks.

Flash floods have displaced thousands of people and swept away hundreds of livestock.
