Government has revealed the total number of Kenyans after the recently conducted census to be 47 million.

In an announcement made at State House, Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) Director General Zachary Mwangi said the total population of Kenya currently stands at 47,564,296.

He further stated that 23.6 million of the total are male while 24 million are female, representing 50.5 percent of the total population.

The intersex population stands at 1,524.

In the report which is the first volume to be produced, Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Kakamega and Bungoma stood out as the five most populous counties.

Lamu, Isiolo, Samburu, Tana River and Taita Taveta are the least populated counties.

2009 Census

During the 2009 Census, the population of Kenya stood at 37.7 million. The report was handed to President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House on Monday morning.

President Kenyatta noted that the report would go a long way in helping in successful planning in various Government ministries.

"The numbers released today will go a long way in guiding successive planning for the benefit of all Kenyans. I expect that KNBS will release the other census volumes and make them available to planners.

"We direct all ministries, departments and government agencies to utilize the census results in their planning processes. I also urge county gov’ts, stakeholders and development partners to do the same," Kenyatta stated.
