Nigeria's health minister has confirmed the first case of coronavirus in Lagos state.

In a statement on Friday, the patient was an Italian man who had returned to the country from Milan, Italy on the 25th of February 2020.

Health Minister Osagie Ehanire said: "The patient is clinically stable, with no serious symptoms, and is being managed at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos."

Over the past 48 hours, dozens of countries have recorded their first confirmed cases and the world’s leading health official warned of a coming pandemic.

Growing cases of Coronavirus

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization stated: “We are actually in a very delicate situation in which the outbreak can go in any direction based on how we handle it.”

More than 83,000 people in at least 47 countries have been infected.

New cases have been recently reported outside China, where the outbreak began in December, than within in the country.

On Thursday, the Kenyan health ministry stated that everything was under control after the government allowed a plane from China to land with 239 passengers onboard.
