A student who heroically helped in rescuing her colleagues during last Saturday’s fire at the Moi Girls High School has died.

Mary Njengo Mokaya, 14, succumbed to injuries on Monday after two days at the Kenyatta National Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, where she was admitted with two other girls.

Her body was transferred to the Chiromo Mortuary, bringing the death toll to nine after the school fire.

Njengo sustained 66 per cent burns as she bravely guided her colleagues out of the dormitory which was engulfed in flames.

According to many students at the dormitory, Njengo was the first one to wake up and noticed the smoke.

She quickly took her own blanket and rushed to the bed where the fire started frantically trying to put it off as she screamed to alert the others on the danger.

As the flames grew bigger, Njengo physically forced some of her colleagues out of the burning dormitory.

During a press briefing on Monday, Education Cabinet Secretary revealed that the fire was not an accident but an arson attack.

“I can tell you unequivocally that I have been briefed by the police that it was not an accident. All investigations have ruled out the fact that that was not an accident, it was a case of arson and a number of interrogations have happened,” he said.

The CS said the police were carrying out more background checks on the suspected arsonists and that they would be arrested immediately.
