Moi Girls High School rape case takes shocking twist after new investigations

The rape incident at the school in June shocked and angered Kenyans

The Moi Girls High School rape case has taken a shocking twist following new investigations into the incident that shocked the country.

According to an independent investigation by the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet), the rape victim might have been assaulted by lesbian colleagues.

In a report by the Standard, the probe is similar to that one conducted internally at the school which found inconsistencies in reports about the incident which concluded that a man could not be placed at the scene on the night of June 1 when he incident occured.

Kuppet highlighted that the first test for rape on the student by a clinical officer tested negative.

A second test by a specialist indicated that there was penetration.

“Presented with this discrepancy, the girl’s parents were asked to pick another hospital for a tie-breaker test and they picked Kenyatta National Hospital. Results from KNH which the media never reported were negative,” stated the report.

Government action

Following the incident, Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed directed that trainers and coaches in all public schools be teachers with a Teachers Service Commission (TSC) number.

CS Mohamed also banned visiting days in all public secondary schools after the current mid term break.

The government also dissolved Moi Girls' School Nairobi's Board of Management and Parents Association with immediate effect with the CS announcing that all staff will be vetted afresh.

The national school was closed for a week a day after a student was raped in one of the hostels on June 2, 2018.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) later took DNA samples  from males who live within the school or those believed to have been at the school during the time of the rape to find out the person behind the crime.
