Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta and John Magufuli have reached an agreement to lift restrictions on imports between Kenya and Tanzania.
The deal was announced on Sunday by Tanzania's Foreign Affairs minister Augustine Mahiga. This will now see Kenya lift restrictions on wheat flour and liquefied petroleum gas from Tanzania with immediate effect. On the other hand, Tanzania will also remove the restrictions on milk, tyres, margarine and cigarettes from Kenya which it had imposed, the Nation reports. The neighboring countries will also lift any other restrictions that affect products and services exchanged between the two countries.
Due to a strained relationship between the countries, both had imposed bans on each other's exports. This had made life difficult for traders at the borders who were not allowed to pass goods from both Tanzania and Kenya.During Magufuli's visit to Kenya in 2016, he played down any sort of differences between Kenya and Tanzania, affirming that the two countries had good relations.
