Appearing at a Milimani Court, the Magistrate directed Owino to be remanded at Kileleshwa Police Station awaiting bail ruling on Wednesday.
Owino was arrested for allegedly abusing President Uhuru Kenyatta during a campaign rally in Kawangware area, Nairobi.
According to the charge sheet, however, the former Nairobi University student leader is accused of breaking Section 77 of the Penal Code.
The Penal Code which stipulates for a maximum of seven years indicates: “Any person who does or attempts to do, or makes any preparation to do, or conspires with any person to do, any act with a subversive intention, or utters any words with a subversive intention, is guilty of an offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding seven years”.
Owino denied the charges of subversion and uttering words meant to excite disaffection against the Head of State.
On Monday, Mr. Owino caused an uproar after a video of him seemingly insulting President Kenyatta and subsequently his mother Mama Ngina Kenyatta was shared widely on social media.
In the recording the MP is caught calling Kenyatta mtoto wa mbwa which in English loosely translates to ‘son of a bitch’.
