Popular Classic 105 raido presenter, Maina Kageni, on Wednesday officially announced that he will be on the August 8 General Election, as a candidate for the Nairobi Women Representative seat.

Maina who has been urged to vie for the seat severally, told 'journalists' that he had finally considered what started out as a joke.

In a video, the well-known radio show host showcased ‘clearance’ papers supposedly issued by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for him to be on the ballot.

“I didn’t take it seriously when people said I need to run for women representative. But after much thought and consideration I have realized that the demand is real and this is the time to make a move,”  Maina noted in the video appeared to look like a press briefing.

Maina popularly known for his Maina and Kingangi show divulged that his symbol will be a wig to represent the beauty of a Nairobi woman.

Mr. Kageni who will be running as an independent candidate noted: “If we stay where we are we will never make a difference”.

He wished his rivals Jubilee’s Rachel Shebesh and ODM’s Esther Passaris well as they contest for the seat.

It is time women got proper representation and their voices heard for the stability of homes all over Nairobi,” the radio show host stated.

It is not yet clear if Maina was simply bluffing or if he was serious about vying for the Women Representative seat.

There has been controversy on whether a man can be allowed to vie for the seat as several men expressed interest last year.

However, the Constitution highlights that the National Assembly Assembly should have 290 MPs, 12 nominated parliamentarians and 47 women each elected by registered voters of the counties.
