Any woman or guy with an acne prone skin understands how frustrating getting rid of those suckers from your face can be.

You’ll try everything from buying useless expensive skin care to clearing out your home food store trying to find the right ingredients to make the perfect mask and scrub for your face.

One highly recommended home remedy that a lot of people are accustomed to using is toothpaste. While a lot of people will swear by the miraculous skin clearing powers of toothpaste, it may actually be doing more harm than good.

Let’s face it, toothpaste can dry out a pimple really quick but you may have to re-think considering it as a definite go to skin care solution and this is why

Why you shouldn’t use toothpaste to clear pimples

Ingredients in toothpaste such as sodium lauryl sufate, sodium laureth sulfate and sodium fluoride can really irritate your skin. They strip natural lipids (fats and oils) from the skin thus exposing your skin to ‘external irritants’. This is according to Futurederm.com.

Basically it just causes peeling, over drying of the skin and burning as well.

You could also be exposing your skin to pigmentation problems. Dermatologist Dr. Ranella Hirsch told Bustle that “skin that contains more melanin tends to be reactive, meaning that when it comes into contact with an irritating agent, dark pigmentation can occur”.

What to use instead of toothpaste

Skin care products that contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid work wonders for acne prone skin.

There you have it. No matter how many times your friend, sister tries to convince you to use toothpaste on your face, don't do it.
