Narc Kenya leader and Kirinyaga County gubernatorial hopeful, Martha Karua, has warned the Nation Super Alliance (NASA) led by Raila Odinga of its plans to set up a parallel vote tallying centre during the upcoming polls.

Speaking at Kandongu Shopping centre in Mwea on Wednesday, Karua stated that the Opposition’s plan was illegal and warned that it could cause tension in the country.

The former Gichugu MP noted that it was only the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) that was mandated to tally and announce results as per the law.

“I want to tell my friends from NASA that only IEBC is supposed to announce election results. If aspirants will start to announce their own victory at the expense of the right results, this might brew post-election violence,” the Narc-Kenya Party leader warned.

Karua’s sentiments come after the former Prime Minister on Sunday announced that NASA would tally and announce its own results.

“IEBC will announce their results … and we will announce ours from our tallying centre for comparison.” We will not accept fake results as happened in 2013 at Bomas of Kenya,” Odinga stated.

In a rejoinder, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati announced that it was only the electoral body that was allowed to count, tally, collate and declare election results.

“We invite all actors to review the results management framework. By setting up the new integrated election management system, the commission shall guarantee greater transparency, accountability and auditability of the results.

“Other actors, including political parties, shall have access to the results within the framework established by the commission,” Chebukati stated.
