Amram Musungu, who has lived in the US for the past 20 years, says he's always wanted to run for the post to help Kenyans work to get control of a country that he believes is ripe for a change.

The auditor by profession and a married father of two, came to Utah to years ago to pursue his college education and now has a dual citizenship.

Musungu is a member of the Mormon religion and a former member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

"I will be the best president the country has ever had. I'm in this race to win," he told Deseret News, adding that it might be easier to stay in Utah, work his job and spend time with his family.

"But I want the best for Kenya, and every Kenyan should be proud of their country," Musungu said.

Poor background

He says he used to walk dozens of kilometres every day to attend school in Hamuyundi, in Vihiga County in Kenya.

He slept on banana leaves on the floor of his village hut. And he didn't own a pair of shoes until he was 15 years old.

But that didn't stop him from changing his future.

"I wanted to be different. I wanted to help," Musungu said at his home in South Salt Lake.

Rising out of poverty and circumstance himself, Musungu said he hopes to inspire Kenyans to work hard to get control of their country.

Musungu is now set to face President Uhuru Kenyatta and a powerful candidate from the National Super Alliance comprising of Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang'ula.

The other known candidate is Nyamira Senator Kennedy Mong'are.
