The county inspectorate officers were in a standoff with Awiti's supporters in Buxton, where there were trying to erect the huge billboard.

Earlier Awiti, who is seeking to outer incumbent Governor Hassan Joho, complained that Mr. Joho was blocking him from campaigning in the county.

According to the Nyali MP, the county boss had instructed the county askaris to block him despite paying Sh300,920 as down payment for a total sum of Sh1.8 million.

"Joho is displaying dictatorial tendencies, which have been the hallmark of his leadership during the past four and a half years. Mombasa is not a Sultanate and we shall therefore not allow old school tactics, which marked [former] President Daniel Moi's era," Awiti said.

Awiti dared Joho to pull down his billboards stating:"We dare them to pull them down and face the wrath of voters".

Awiti defected from Wiper and is vying on a Vibrant Democratic Party ticket.
