Orders to arrest beggars in the streets

Beggars risk being arrested after an order by governor

Beggars in Meru town risk being arrested after an order by the County governor Kiraitu Murungi.

An order issued by Governor Murungi directed that all beggars and their accomplices be arrested since they were becoming a menace in the county.

All the people who bring in beggars to the streets should be arrested together with the beggars," the Meru governor stated.

Murungi complained of the many beggars within the town and accused some people of enriching themselves by misusing people living with disabilities (PWDs).

He, however, urged the beggars, majority of whom are people living with disabilities to enrol with the newly launched Sacco that the said aimed at making them self-reliant.

Sacco for PWDs established

"I encourage them to instead join the PWD Sacco to benefit from skills training and financial support,” governor Kiraitu said.

The governor further stated that his administration would separately advertise tenders for people living with disabilities to combat exploitation that the minority group faces.

Governor Kiraitu stated that Ksh15 million has been set aside to start the PWDs Sacco where Ksh10million will be saved in the Sacco and the remainder used to train the members in different fields.

His sentiments were echoed by Deputy Governor, Titus Ntuchiu who urged Sacco leaders to come up with strategies to empower PWDs.
