Al Shabaab attack GSU camp after Uhuru's visit

The attack comes barely a few hours after Uhuru declared war on the group

A group of Al-Shabaab militants on Tuesday morning tried to invade a GSU Camp, just hours after President Uhuru Kenyatta promised to do away with the terrorist group in the country.

The militants were spotted approaching the camp shortly before 1 am but were rebuffed afterwards.

”We asked them to identify themselves but they refused. There was an exchange of fire that lasted about 20 minutes before we overpowered them and they disappeared into the bushes,” said a source who spoke to Nation.

Another police source said that he received a text message from one of his bosses asking him to be alert because the Mokowe GSU camp was under attack.

Some of the locals claimed that they heard gunshots overnight. No casualties were however reported in the skirmish.

The incident comes just a few hours after President Kenyatta, who was on a tour of Lamu County, asked the police not to relent in their fight against the militant group.

The Head-of-state firmly stated that the terrorists must be killed and buried once and for all. He declared a major security operation in Lamu following the numerous attacks in the county.
