Kenyans react to the vetting of Ben Chumo days after he was arrested

Leaders vetting him should refuse the sitting allowance, in protest! - Twitter user.

Mr Chumo, who is currently facing corruption charges for dubious purchases of transformers when he was manager at KPLC, made his appearance in parliament for vetting, with questions bound on his integrity to serve. He was arrested last week by the DCI, and spent several nights at the Gigiri Police Station.

Seemingly disappointed Kenyans took issue with Mr Chumo’s pretense, instead urging him to decline the offer, as it was a bad example in the war against graft, which he has been implicated.

“The ongoing vetting of Ben Chumo is an indication that we are not serious about the war on corruption. President Uhuru Kenyatta should have withdrawn his nomination of Chumo once he was arraigned in court last week,” Twitter pundit Oliver Mathenge opined.

Chumo shocked the panel when he said that the ongoing graft charges in court was a choreographed move to deny him the chance to serve at the SRC.

“I could not have waited for 32yrs to mess up, I think someone is looking to deny me this opportunity, I really deserve it. I don't think this challenge should deny me this opportunity,” Mr Chumo told parliament team vetting him.

Another tweep, Ndung’u Wainaina faulted President Uhuru’s decision to nominate Mr Chumo for the influential job.

“It is completely irrational, deceit and dishonest for Uhuru Kenyatta to retain Ben Chumo as nominee for SRC Chairman. It makes his declarations on corruption appallingly farce. Building Bridges Initiative identified corruption and lack of national ethos that must be addressed,” he said.

Nderitu Muriithi‏ says: “Hebu...Ben Chumo is to be judged if he stole but here he is ready to be the SRC chair...Are we in a parallel universe with our leaders or what?”

BlackTwittaKE‏ added: “Kenya is a rogue state. How can someone like former Kenya Power boss Ben Chumo who is already facing corruption charges be appointed as the SRC boss?”

Another twitter user Njeri James Njoroge said: “who is to blame for the ongoing vetting of Ben Chumo as SRC Chairman the one who nominated him, the vetting team or the media giving them air play.”

Antony Oyugi‏ said:“Ben Chumo and those MPs vetting him for the SRC job should stop testing our madness. A sad day in-deed... I though the only place I will be seeing Ben Chumo's face is when his cases kick off... MPS are vetting him? It should not be happening confused Kenyan.”

Mama Boaz says:“Come on: how is Ben Chumo being vetted with corruption allegations against him? Leaders vetting him should REFUSE the sitting allowance, in protest! How can we allow this as a country, while we have millions of Kenyans that can occupy that position, ably?”

Kipkoech Mitei Rober‏ said:“Was it really necessary for Ben Chumo to undergo vetting process when it is a known fact that he has been accused of economic crimes and mismanagement of a state corporation?”

Meanwhile, Chumo, who said has invested across the country, has told parliament that his wealth stands at Sh212 million.
