The list below highlights the biggest corruption scandals, some of the culprits have been apprehended while others walked away scot-free.

NYS Scandal

The second scandal at the NYS received the media phrase, NYS Season 2, and was nearly ten times worse than the first saga in 2015 where Sh791 million was reportedly lost.

In NYS season 2, Sh9 billion was found to have been lost through shady tendering, including the famous case of Anne Ngirita who is suspected of receiving Sh59 million for delivering nothing, essentially “selling air”.

It was also the first time that the National Intelligence Service (NIS) was actively involved in a corruption-case investigation.

Over 50 officials, including then PS Lillian Omollo have since been charged with corruption-related charges. Several top banks have also been fined over the same scandal.

Kenya Power Transformers saga

Kenya Power in July became subject of a scandal involving procurement of defective transformers, exposing consumers to dangers of electric faults and high bills, and resulting in the loss of Sh5 billion.

Nearly the entire senior management of Kenya Power, including the Managing Director Ken Tarus were arrested and have since stepped aside from their jobs.

Kenya Pipeline Scandal

In August, it emerged that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had uncovered one of the largest corruption scandals at Kenya Pipeline Corporation (KPC) involving more than 27 projects.

Sh95 billion was reportedly lost through faulty procurement processes.

Maize Scandal

The scandal was revealed in late August after it was discovered government officials had diverted Sh11.3 billion meant to pay genuine farmers who sold their maize produce to the government.

The EACC has since charged more than ten officials in connection with the scandal, including Agriculture PS Richard Lesiyampe.

Ruaraka Land scandal

In May, a Nairobi businessman Meshack Onyango Dehay released an explosive dossier, accusing Interior CS Fred Matiang’i of being part of a vicious cartel that had stolen Sh1.5 billion through fake land claims involving the land on which Ruaraka primary and secondary schools.

The scandal came to be known as the Ruaraka land scandal and is one of the mega scandals that has taken the longest time for action to be taken to suspected culprits.
