Police officers were on Thursday morning forced to seal off a section of the Nairobi-Mombasa highway after a petroleum spillage.
Emerging reports indicate that one of the train’s wagon emptied petroleum being ferried from the Mombasa port on the railway line
"We have been forced to close that section of the road because of the danger posed by the spillage of super petrol," Coast Region Traffic Commandant Emmanuel Okanda told journalists.
The train reportedly went off-track at 4.30 am causing the spillage of the highly flammable oil.
The early morning incident led to a huge traffic snarl up at Kibarani, Mombasa County.
Police have since diverted motorists to use other routes in order to manage the situation and prevent any accidents.
