The Law Society of Kenya claimed that defence lawyer Cliff Ombeta is not licensed.

This revelation was made during the hearing of the late lawyer Willie Kimani murder case on Thursday.

Through their lawyer Stephen Ongaro, the LSK told the High Court in Nairobi that Ombeta’s certificate of practice was withdrawn.

Ongaro told justice Jessy Lesiit that Ombeta “does not have enough LSK points to practice law in Kenya” and, therefore, “his license wasn’t renewed”.

Rachel Ruto is no stranger to making bold yet elegant fashion statements, but during the state visit of the Dutch royals on March 18, 2025, it wasn’t just her outfit that stood out—it was her shoes. The Kenyan First Lady stepped out in a pair of brown suede block heels adorned with a gold emblem.

However, Ombeta’s lawyer, Doreen Kali, said her client has a valid license, whose status is published on the LSK website.

Kali maintained that Ombeta is still on the LSK register as a lawyer and that Ongaro’s allegations are “malicious and meant to embarrass Cliff”.

This comes barely two weeks after the High Court ordered Ombeta to get another advocate to represent three accused persons in the Willy Kimani murder case.

On July 13, the case was adjourned after the court was informed that Ombeta was unwell and could not attend court.

Ombeta had shown up in court while clad in sweat-pants to say he could not handle the case because he was in poor health.
